Fairy Chasm State Natural Area

Located in the City of Mequon, WI, Fairy Chasm State Natural Area is 19 acres. This preserve contains an 80 to 100-foot deep chasm created by the flow of Fish Creek, a small stream that drains into Lake Michigan. Due to the cool lake winds and a north-facing geography, it also contains a unique microclimate that mimics more northern habitats. This colder habitat allows species such as sphagnum moss, beaked hazelnut and dwarf scouring rush – not often found this far south – to survive and thrive. The northern slopes of the chasm feature forests of white pine, yellow and paper birch and white cedar; while its southern slopes are the habitat of juniper and trees found in mesic forests such as beech and sugar maple. 

THIS PRESERVE HAS NO BEACH ACCESS. The trail to the lake is not OWLT property and is NOT for public use.
